RECENT WORK

DRAMA SIZZLE REEL

Here's a short reel of some of the work I've undertaken for TV & streaming services. This reel contains mostly live-action visual effects that demonstrate my role as a senior compositor, on-set supervisor and experienced 3D & FX artist in a very busy and productive studio. I can provide a longer, more detailed showreel and credits on request. Warning: graphic content!

MISSION CONTROL

The list is extensive but here are my top eight software packages. I've used computer-aided design in one form or another since 2003. My first packages were Auto-CAD, 3DS-Max and Cinema 4D. My first compositing suite was Fusion; Now Nuke and Maya are my main suites and I'm adding Houdini to my arsenal too.

I'm a senior compositor and a veteran Nuke user. Nuke is my weapon of choice and cornerstone of my VFX workflow. Out of all the software I use Nuke is my favourite and most capable in my hands.

I've used Maya for over 12 years and it's my top choice for complex layouts, post-set surveys, rigging, animation and modeling. Maya has stood the test of time as being one of the most adaptable softwares.

I've been a V-Ray user since 2012. The freedom that V-ray offers me is second to none and the results are breathtaking. before V-Ray I was an avid Mental-Ray user, with a brief spell of our friend Arnold.

Phoenix has been my go-to suite for liquid, smoke and fire simulations. Phoenix allows for sensible art direction and fast turn-around; with straight-forward caching.

Photoshop needs no introduction and along with Nuke is my tool of choice for DMP work. I use affinity photo too which I think is a great alternative.

I love how lightning fast Resolve is. I implement it for reviewing, grading and for all Editorial & Wrangling work. As a free tool it's priceless.

I've started using Houdini now. I'll be focusing on FLIP, Fluids and particles; as well as Layout and working with Houdini Engine & Maya.

There's few applications that are as powerful and have my respect as 3D Equalizer does. it offers unparallelled scene solving with a quick and quirky UI.

NICE TO MEET YOU

NIce To Meet You!

I'm Rick, originally from Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, now based in Manchester, UK. I've been a VFX artist and on-set supervisor for over 10 years. I'm now a freelance VFX artist and on-set supervisor. I've spent a decade at Space Digital Film & VFX. I joined Space early in my career and that's where I have gained unparalleled, wide-ranging and exclusive experience as one of their dependable artists and on-set supervisor. I like hard work and what makes me tick in this industry is the realism that is achievable and I'm fanatical about quality and I've always been a huge fan of film and drama on screen. I have a passion for deeply integrated, realistic and plausible VFX. I have a sharp focus on technical best-practices and enjoy most technical aspects of my job. Working on TV and streaming dramas and features, as well as commercial and corporate films has moulded me into a very productive and fast worker. When I'm not creating visual effects I like to spend time doing practical hobbies like model making, painting and I have a pretty serious home cinema hobby to go along with my reverence of epic audio and visual experiences.

AS SEEN ON TV

My work has made it onto screen thanks to a wide range of production companies, broadcasters and platforms; the talented teams, supervisors and artists; and those who develop our software. Our industry is blessed with talent and I'm thankful to be a part of it.

We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard ; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win, and the others, too.
